What is Grain Milling?

The process of grinding wheat, rice and other grain into flour is called grain milling or flour milling. In the old days, stone mill or steel wheel mill is the main device for grain grinding. Now, with the developing of grain processing technic and the increasing demand of flour quality, flour processing machines appear constantly including cleaning equipment, grinding machine, packing machine and so on. Depending on different types of grain, there are wheat miller, corn grinder, rice miller…for your choice.

The grain milling process basically includes cleaning, dampening, tempering, grinding, sifting, blending and packaging. Customized four mill solution is available to produce different standard of flour.

  Cleaning process: Use different grain cleaning machines including wheat scourer, vibrating sieve, destoner, foreign seeds extractor… to remove the impurities such s stone, and straw, rotten and wormy wheat. Different quality of grain and equipment on final flour needs different flour milling solution.

  Dampening process: dampening process comes after cleaning. The purpose of this stage is adjusting the grain to certain water content, so that to improve the toughness of wheat skin and reduce the mechanical strength of wheat endosperm.

  Tempering process: After dampening, there is tempering silo which is used to store the wheat for 8~24 hours. The time and temperature varies according to different grain. After tempering, the wheat is called clean wheat. The moisture content should be 14~16%, or it will affect the following flour milling process.

  Flour milling: This is a very complicated process including grinding, sifting and purification. You can get flour, coarse bran, fine bran through this process. Flour mill machine such as maize miller, rice miller is used in this process.

  Blending: In most cases, people need to mix more than one kind of wheat or other grain according to certain proportion. Through blending, you can adjust the proportion of final flour based on your needs. Finally, package the flour and send them for sale.
